I am excited to announce the launch of my first product, the CG 1060 chair.

The CG 1060 chair has been rather impatiently waiting for the opportunity to get out of my creative brain and into the wide world.

In development, the CG 1060 chair has been designed responsibly for comfort, sustainability and in particular, longevity. Built around techniques developed over the last decade, it is finally going into production.

The CG 1060 chair has been awarded a 2024 Silver award in the French Design awards in the category Professional furniture. You can read more about it here. A special edition CG1060 chair in brown oak has also been selected for second place in the Alan Peters Furniture Award 2024. You can read more about it here.

The Journey

Initial prototyping

Drawing on a lifetime of cabinet making, I embarked on a new challenge: designing my first product for small batch production, a sustainable chair. I started by rethinking traditional joinery and geometry conventions to create a groundbreaking prototype, with the focus on comfort.

In the workshop

At the heart of the construction are the chevron form seat assembly and eight sliding dovetail joints which enable the chair to support its cantilever form. These glued, mechanical fixings in combination with the chevron cross section provide the strength required to ensure a long and reliable service life, as well as the exceptional level of comfort.

Final design

A chair to serve generations. Made from renewable materials, designed and made to last longer than its materials will take to re-grow.
To be stable enough to meet the needs of the young and old alike. To be reliable, comfortable and serviceable while able to maintain visual interest throughout its intended lifespan. A modern classic out of traditional values and craftsmanship.

Pret model

‘Pret’ is surprisingly in my surname and in taking the classic french idea of ‘Prêt à l'emploi’ (Ready to use) provided the perfect name of the basic model of the CG 1060 chair.

Constructed in selected 18mm premium grade birch plywood throughout, the Pret model is simpler to manufacture and can be made efficiently in multiples for offices, schools and institutions.

About

Christopher Pretlove

BIO

I started learning the principles of woodworking and manufacturing by my father’s side through most of my childhood. Father was a cabinet maker.

My formal design education began at A-level, studying Design Technology, Art with Art History and Engineering Drawing.

Post philosophy degree, employment started in the woodwork manufacturing industry, with which came the realisation of the extent that the manufacturing technology defines the design parameters.

Setting up own workshop 10 years ago allowed experimentation with new manufacturing techniques. These techniques subsequently expanded my design horizons. Over the last year I have taken the results of this work to develop my first product, the CG 1060 chair.
